Local government law is a specialized area of legal practice. While representing the Board of Commissioners of Sumter County and the Board of Commissioners of Quitman County, I had the opportunity to experience the full range of legal questions and challenges. As county attorney I also represented each department of county government, especially the three that had the most legal issues: the Sheriff, the Tax Collector and the Tax Assessors. The County Commissioners, Sheriff, Tax Collector and Tax Assessors had cases filed against them in State and Federal Court and I obtained the experience of successfully representing them in those courts. I understand, not only the legal responsibility involved in representing local government, but also understand the personal dynamics, the possible politics, and budget restraints involved in decision making.
